April Is Your Last Call to Plant a Tree This Spring
Spring planting season in North Carolina runs from late February through mid-April. Mild temperatures and spring rains help new roots grow. By May, the ground warms fast. Young trees start to struggle.
April is not too late but it is close. Plant now and water well. Most species will take hold. Wait until June and you are fighting the tree all season.

Why the Timing Matters
Trees need energy to grow new roots. In spring, soil temperatures are cool and moisture is plentiful. The tree puts energy into roots first. Plant too late and that changes. The tree manages stress instead of growing.
In the Triangle and Piedmont, summers arrive fast and stay hot. A tree with a shallow root system in July heat is under real pressure. Some make it. Many don't.
If You Plant This Month
Water deeply at planting. Soak the root ball fully.
Mulch 2 to 3 inches out to the drip line. Keep it off the trunk.
Water every few days for the first four to six weeks.
Choose native species. They handle our summers better than most.
Skip fertilizer at planting. It pushes top growth before roots are ready.
If You Miss the Window
Wait until fall. October and November are excellent for planting in NC. The air cools before the soil does. Roots keep growing even after leaves drop. Fall plantings often establish better than spring ones.
Do not push through a summer planting. Daily watering and shade help, but the survival rate drops sharply. Save yourself the money. Save the tree the stress.
What to Plant
Native species built for our climate are your best bet. Dogwood, redbud, river birch, and willow oak all perform well in the Piedmont. They need less care over time. They support local wildlife too.
